2017 – Significant Anniversaries

2017 marks some significant anniversaries for the land and people of Israel.

  • It’s 100 years since British and allied forces began a campaign to end 500 years of Turkish occupation of Palestine (1917)
  • It’s 100 years since the British and allied forces took the city of Jerusalem from the Turks (December 1917)
  • It’s 100 years since the Balfour Declaration (2 November 1917).  This declaration issued by Arthur Balfour, British Foreign Secretary, was a statement of British foreign policy indicating support for the establishment of homeland for the Jews in Palestine
  • It’s 50 years since Israeli forces recaptured the city of Jerusalem from Jordan (7 June 1967) during the Six Day War

The above listed events mark major turning points in the history of the land and people of Israel and the city of Jerusalem since the Romans captured the city of Jerusalem in AD 70 and dispersed the Jewish survivors throughout the Roman Empire.

What is the significance of these events?

The Bible provides the answer. It records the following:

Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He who scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him as a shepherd does his flock.   Jeremiah 31:10

Thus says the Lord GOD: Surely I will take the children of Israel from among the nations, wherever they have gone, and will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land; and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king over them all …  Ezekiel 37:21-22

These verses and many others indicate that it is the long-declared purpose of God to regather His people of Israel, that he scattered among the nations, back to their ancient homeland.  The events of the past 100 years are part of a remarkable realisation of God’s purpose.

What is the reason for Israel’s regathering and restoration?

The modern revival of the nation of Israel in their own land is in preparation for the return of their Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall become the “one king” who “shall be king over them all(Ezekiel 37:22).

The Bible reveals that the second coming of Jesus Christ will be the next major event in the land of Israel preceded by all nations fighting over possession of the city of Jerusalem.
